Digital Daily’s stumbled across a leaked document apparently addressed to webOS devs that shows a timeline for bringing paid apps to the webOS App Catalog, and one date in particular stands out: September 24 for go-live. The infrastructure’s been in beta for a while now, giving everyone some time to get up to speed on the process and iron out the bugs, but for end users, the launch will likely happen in concert with the webOS 1.2 update we’ve been expecting this month and a redesigned Catalog app designed to support payments.
The Palm Pre showed up on a recent episode of Numb3rs, and we can only assume that confused look on Charlie’s face is the simplistic calculator that ships stock with webOS. Or could it be something much more sinister?

It’s pretty typical for serial KIRFers to make minor changes to the names of the brands they’re ripping — take Sany Ericssan, for example — but we’ve never really known why. “Go big or go home” is the KIRF mantra we prefer to live by, and if you’re going to gank a phone’s design, by golly, do it with gusto. Give it 110 percent. In your heart, after all, that NOKLA’s really a Nokia — it’s what you feel deep inside that really matters, and no well-staffed, well-funded Finnish legal team can tell you otherwise. That’s what we’ve got to hand it to this particular model, simply called “Copy Nokia N900” in a painfully honest, accurate admission of its true raison d’être. Strangely, though, they’ve missed a few basic points: the Copy Nokia N900 trades the genuine article’s landscape QWERTY slider for a dual slide configuration in the same vein as the N85 and N95, for example, and Maemo 5 has gone missing — instead, you’re treated to a frighteningly accurate S60 5th Edition knockoff. If you can tolerate the dismal VGA cam, GPRS data, and QVGA screen, you’ll be pleased to discover that the phone features an analog (yes, analog) TV tuner and an accelerometer with “support” for flick control, which you can watch in action on video after the break — looks super fun and usable, doesn’t it?

The last thing you want to hear about a few short days after a product’s launch is a litany of issues plaguing devices in the field, but that’s not quite what’s going on here — instead, this looks to be an extension of Verizon’s well-known policy of testing the crap out of devices until manufacturers are practically crying uncle. The carrier has already generated long internal lists of issues on both the DROID and DROID Eris, it seems, with the leaked documents revealing some five pages for the Motorola product and seven — yes, seven — for the HTC one; the good news is that they’re all slated to be fixed in one of two firmware updates slated for December and January windows. Again, knowing Verizon, these firmware updates could very well get stuck in the testing lab for another six years, but we’ll keep our hopes skyward.

Okay, we think we’re starting to get a good picture for how T-Mobile’s Android plans for the year are going to play out (naturally, this is all subject to change — we doubt the manufacturers know precisely when they’ll be ready with this stuff, much less the carrier). That seemingly leaked roadmap has now revealed its final Android-based treasure, a Motorola “Morrison” that looks a heck of a lot like the device we’d seen leaked through some Wal-mart docs. Granted, there’s a silver bar at the bottom here that isn’t present in the earlier picture, but they could easily be different generations of rendered mockups, so we’re not putting too much weight on that discrepancy. The roadmap currently has the Morrison pegged for the holiday season, so there’ll be plenty of Android devices available to you before you get a crack at this one — which probably isn’t how Moto would like to see it work out, but hey, them’s the breaks.

Twice the antennas means twice the streams (MIMO, ya dig?), but Atheros has decided to ditch one for its new mobile-friendly AR6003 chip. It’s a power-saving move called “one-stream 11n,” and while we’ve seen it before that doesn’t mean we have to like it. Atheros’s solution provides a maximum throughput of 85Mbps, which is frankly nothing to shake a stick at, and despite that will suck down 20 percent less power than its earlier AR6002 802.11a/b/g chip. In other words, we’ll rock it in our celly — begrudgingly.

It may have some 48,000 or so to go before it catches the runaway leader in app choice, but doubling up its catalog after launching just 3.5 months ago ain’t nothing to scoff at. As RIM suffers through the traditional growing pains with its fledgling BlackBerry App World, it has managed to amass around 2,000 programs for users to love, hate or feel completely indifferent about. According to Jeff McDowell, vice president of global alliances, that number is apt to rise when it goes live in Italy, France, Germany and Spain this month. Also of note, Mr. McDowell declined to say just how many downloads had taken place, but he did note that RIM was “very happy” with the response. Unfortunately, we’re not so certain that the company is eager to raise that 2,000 figure to something much higher, with ole Jeff spouting off that “[it doesn’t matter] whether it’s 40,000 or 2,000 [apps], you’ve still got a broad range of choice.” We’re willing to bet the public sees that a bit differently — right, public?

At $100, the underpowered Pixi doesn’t look like a great value against its bigger, older brother — but at the $30 Walmart is charging through its partner LetsTalk, the game changes a bit, doesn’t it? Sure, $70 isn’t that huge of a difference quantitatively, but emotionally, $30 is basically an overpriced meal or two — and considering the old adage of “a moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hips,” wouldn’t you just rather have webOS? We’ve heard of some bad experiences with LetsTalk rebates in the past, but in this case, it’s just an instant discount, so it seems like it could be a no-brainer for on-the-fencers.
